Mayange
Rwanda
PROJECT Akilah is establishing a vocational training institute for young Rwandan women in the town of Mayange, Rwanda. Our goal is to create an environment that will allow us to fulfill our underlying mission of promoting sustainable peace in a post-conflict society through training and educating the female population with vocational skills. PROJECT AKilah has recognized that a holistic approach to reconciliation is vital. The institute will combine human rights, education, and economic empowerment to provide opportunities to the 200+ students.

AfH headquarters will have a booth at the AIA Convention to be held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center from May 17-19. Reminder: AfH/ AIA Grant deadline is May 14!

  The AfH / AIA grant program deadline is May 14th and we need your help!  Our task is to write a proposal for a disaster management plan for the DC area.  Piece o' cake, right?  It's worth a shot - the winning Chapter gets up to 2000 dollars to help execute the plan.  And we ESPECIALLY WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU IF YOU'RE A MEMBER OF A LOCAL AIA CHAPTER!  (Please pardon the shout.) Volunteers Needed for Wise Young Builders Program

Do you have an interest in teaching young people about the built environment?  AfH DC is teaming up with Wise Young Builders this May to engage in an unique enrichment program that helps kids, ages 8-12, sharpen their critical thinking skills through the use of math and construction. Three volunteers are needed either 1 or both Sundays, May 13th and May 20th from 3:30-4:30. The session will teach kids about working and engaging with their community, and in the process, learning about scale and fractions.  As a final project the kids will construct a neighborhood map.
